'Where did it come from? Wednesday!'

A new installment from Bloodlines Reforged as suggested by a great fan, Korra. We'll periodically drop some tidbits of lore and knowledge about our world of Stratvs. If you have a question, just ask. So, without further adieu;
Bloody George's - a tavern located in Wodock (Raven's Nest)
This tavern has a tradition of being named after the previous owner. It has changed hands 38 times in the approximate two and a half centuries it has been open. It was first Bill's Buckets, and when Bill was killed, during a dispute over watered down drinks, a retiring pirate captain by the name of Ralm took over ownership (even before Bill's corpse had been hauled from the place). Ralm, in his own odd fashion, decided to honor Bill by renaming the 'establishment' Bloody Bill's. After that, the tradition stuck. Four Finger George was the most recent proprietor to meet his end in this storied tavern. www.bloodlinesreforged.com

Where Did It Come From? Wednesday! This week I've included the original map of Stratvs I drew in 1999 (there's a reason I use software for maps now). I have always loved books with maps and, as the epic saga began to take form, I really needed a visual reference for geography. www.bloodlinesreforged.com

Where did it come from? Wednesday! I've been asked many times how I envision my characters. I think each reader should have their own thoughts, but as for me, my process is... less artistic, I'm sad to say. I usually think of an actor in a specific role that embodies the character. In Dunewell's case, I have always thought of him as Rutger Hauer's portrayal of Navarre in LadyHawke. Hence, the alias Rutger, sometimes used by Dunewell. www.bloodlinesreforged.com

Where did it come from? Wednesday! I've always thought of Silas of House Morosse, who has lived in my head for over a decade, as Edward Norton. www.bloodlinesreforged.com

Where did it come from? Wednesday? Thus follows the origin of ‘Shyeld,’ pronounced Shy-eld. In Stratvs Shyeld has the meaning of Knight or warrior sworn to the old Code of the Cavalier; often referring to a quested knight. The root word is from the elven language of Chellos and means righteous guardian. I took the word ‘Childe’ from the poem ‘Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came’ by Robert Browning. A "Childe" in this context is the eldest son of a nobleman who has not yet attained knighthood, or who has not yet "won his spurs.” I decided to pronounce it as shi-eld instead of child and thus the creation of the word ‘Shyeld.’
Roland, of course, is a composite of many influences, among them the ‘Song of Roland,’ a historic piece of French literature, Browning’s poem referenced above, and the character from Stephen King’s Dark Tower novels.
Pictured is from the cover of Terry Brooks’ great work, Druid of Shannara. I saw this picture and knew instantly that it was my Roland. www.bloodlinesreforged.com

Where did it come from? Wednesday! I came up with the idea of the Shrou-Hayn (a large two-handed sword) and the fighting stance, or guard, the RavenWing when reviewing actual techniques used by medieval warriors (which sharply contrast techniques seen in most movies). They emphasize using both ends of the long sword to strike and parry as well as advise placing a hand farther down the blade for some maneuvers that require more control. I've attached a couple of pics that display and describe some of those techniques. www.bloodlinesreforged.com

Where did it come from? Wednesday! Verkial was created by a good friend of mine, Simon Dwyer, for our pen&paper RPG game about 2 decades ago. He envisioned a medieval version of The Undertaker. Thus, the villain's hero was born. www.bloodlinesreforged.com

Where did it come from? Wednesday! I read Warrior's Path by Louis L'Amour in my youth and loved the tale! It had everything a young boy could want in a story; gunfights, swordplay, wild Native Americans, and pirates! I knew then if I ever wrote a book, I'd make the title "(Main Character's Name) Path." Thus, Roland's Path. www.bloodlinesreforged.com

Where did it come from? Wednesday! Warning! Spoilers ahead! The single combat between Roland and Maloch, then Knight of Sorrows, "really" happened. I draw a great deal of the Bloodlines Reforged Saga from homebrew pen&paper RPGs we've played for the past 2 1/2 decades. Roland, my character, was very low level when this fight took place but we saw it as our only chance for the party to survive. I got lucky with the initiative, attack, AND crit rolls (all in the top 5% of possible rolls) and the crit result was that I cut off Maloch's leg, leaving him incapacitated for 12 rounds before his death. According to our deal, we were allowed to go our way while his soldiers immediately began treating Maloch's wound. All of us, player characters and NPCs alike, were afraid of Maloch's "Retributive Strike," a spell a paladin can cast upon his death unleashing the raw power of his deity on all in the area. So, we fled while they scrambled to save Maloch's life. www.bloodlinesreforged.com
