Inspiration[edit | edit source]
Roland began as a character in a 1996 pen and paper tabletop RPG of Rolemaster. Roland was named after the hero from the epic French poem (chanson de geste), The Song of Roland, the Gunslinger from Stephen King's Dark Tower series. His personality was originally an amalgamation of the two characters he was named after. Over the years however, various aspects of R.J. Hanson's personality began to seep through as well, such as Roland's impatience, as well as other shortcomings.[2]
Roland's physical appearance is based on a young Jeffery Dean Morgan.[3]
“ | The French Roland is sarcastic, irreverent, and a true old-school hero. King's Gunslinger is an incredible combination of a romantic knight, cynical killer, champion of the weak, and monstrous villain. | „ |

- The other is Morosse, the Spike Thumb,(Story) named after Morosse, the Spike Thumb.(Character)
- The name Roland's Path was set in stone long before the book was ever written. R.J. Hanson read Warrior's Path by Louis L'Amour in high school and told himself he'd name his story "(Main Character's Name) Path" if he ever wrote his own book.[4][5]
- Roland is R.J. Hanson's character in a tabletop RPG he's been playing with friends for over 2 1/2 decades.[6]
- Roland's single combat with Maloch, the then Knight of Sorrows, really happened during a tabletop game. Roland was a low-level character, but due to a lucky initiative attack, AND multiple crit rolls, Roland cut off Maloch's leg and thus the party was able to escape.[6]
- The title given to Roland by the Dwarves, "Tall Walker", was the dwarven nickname for his ancestor, King Ivant, by the dwarves.[7][8][9]
